Today, the youth had the opportunity to make homemade ice cream in a freezer bag. Each of the youth used the same basic ingredients and recipe (found below) to make their ice cream. Afterward, each youth had the opportunity to add different toppings to create their own special concoction.

Making homemade ice cream can be a great family activity. Most ingredients and supplies needed can be found in one’s kitchen cupboard. Without further ado, here are the ingredients and items one will need to make two scoops of ice cream at home:

Items needed:

  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 cup of milk (whole, 2%, or half-and-half)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of non-alcohol vanilla extract (for vanilla ice cream) OR cocoa powder (for chocolate ice cream)
  • 5-6 tablespoons of table salt (rock salt works better if you have some at home)
  • Ice
  • 1 pint-size seal-able plastic food storage bag (Ziploc)
  • 1 gallon-size seal-able plastic freezer bag (Ziploc)
  • Gloves or an old t-shirt

  • Add the sugar, milk, and non-alcohol vanilla extract/cocoa powder to the pint-size food storage bag. Make sure to seal the bag tightly to ensure the contents don’t slip out.
  • Add the ice (should fill half of the bag) and table/rock salt to the gallon-size freezer bag.
  • Place the sealed pint-size food storage bag in the gallon-size freezer bag. Seal the gallon-size freezer bag tightly.
  • Vigorously shake the bags until the contents of the pint-size food storage bag start to solidify. It will take between 10-20 minutes of shaking the bags before your ice cream is ready for consumption. Use gloves or an old t-shirt to protect your hands from
  • After 10-20 minutes of shaking, remove the ice cream from the pint-size food storage bag and place in a bowl.
  • Add toppings of your choice (sprinkles, strawberries, nuts, hot chocolate, caramel, etc.) and enjoy!

To make the activity fun, we held a competition between the youth to see who could produce the best homemade ice cream concoction. The youth were judged based on the quality (liquid or solid), texture (smooth, creamy), taste, and name chosen for their product.

We had several great choices for top ice cream concoction. In the end, four individual products stood out over the rest:

  • Ma shaa Allah” by Tasawwar
  • Chocolatey Rainbow” by Mohaned
  • Ocean of Rainbows” by Murtaza
  • Chocolate Soup” by Ali

Great work by everyone!

After we finished devouring our fair share of ice cream, Salah delivered a beautiful khatarah (short reminder) on the topic of Mus’ab bin Umeyr, radi Allahu anhu. Mus’ab, radi Allahu anhu, was a great sahabi (companion) of Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam. One of his remarkable achievements was that he, radi Allahu anhu, was the first envoy sent to city of Medina to educate the residents about Islam. This occurred prior to the Muslims migrating from Mecca to Medina.
