Tonight, the youth had an opportunity to channel their inner Iron Chef and let their creative juices flow. Working together in three separate teams, the youth prepared a two-dish Italian meal. Team 1 (Malik [team leader], Mohamed, and Amine) was responsible for making spaghetti. Team 2 (Mujtaba [team leader], Murtaza, and Asim) was responsible for making grilled cheese sandwiches. Team 3 (Yacoob [team leader], Amir, Ali, and Amr) helped prepare the tomato sauce for the spaghetti.

Below are the items and recipe we used for our Italian Night event:

Spaghetti

Items needed:

  • Box of raw spaghetti (or pasta of your choice)
  • Water
  • Salt (we used Morton iodized table salt)
  • Cooking pot

Recipe:

  • Fill the cooking pot halfway with water.
  • Place the cooking pot on the stove and turn on medium heat.
  • When water starts boiling, add raw spaghetti to the pot.
  • Add 1 tablespoon salt.
  • Cook spaghetti for 15-20 minutes (may take more time depending on how much spaghetti you are preparing).
  • Drain the pot and transfer the cooked spaghetti to a serving plate.

Grilled cheese sandwiches

Items needed:

  • One bag of sliced bread (either wheat or white will work fine)
  • One stick of butter
  • One package of sliced American cheese (or cheese of your choice)
  • Butter knife
  • Non-stick frying pan

Recipe:

  • Using the butter knife, gently apply butter to one side of each slice of bread.
  • Place the non-stick frying pan on the stove and turn knob to low heat.
  • Place one slice of bread down (butter side facing the pan) on the frying pan.
  • Add a slice of American cheese to the top surface of the bread (in the frying pan).
  • Add a second slice of bread (non-buttered side touching the cheese) to the cheese (making a sandwich).
  • Gently toast the slice of bread in the frying pan for 30-60 seconds (or until surface of bread turns lightly brown).
  • Flip the sandwich over and toast the other side for 30-60 seconds.
  • Remove the sandwich from the frying pan and place in a serving dish.

Spaghetti sauce

Items needed:

  • One 6-ounce container of tomato paste
  • 4 cups of water
  • Iodized salt (Morton)
  • 1 tablespoon of minced garlic (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of minced oregano (optional)
  • 2 diced tomatoes (optional)
  • 1 diced green bell pepper (can also use yellow or red bell pepper instead)
  • Diced mushrooms (optional)

Team 3 prepared two different types of spaghetti sauce. The recipes for both sauces can be found below.

  • Gently stir in 1/2 of a diced bell pepper and oregano.
  • Add salt to your own personal liking.
  • Allow sauce to simmer for 30 minutes on medium heat. Periodically stir the sauce.
  • Makes 3-5 servings

“Veggie Supreme” Recipe:

  • Gently stir in 1/2 of a diced bell pepper, diced mushrooms, tomatoes, minced garlic, and oregano.
  • Add salt to your own personal liking.
  • Allow sauce to simmer for 30 minutes on medium heat. Periodically stir the sauce.
