Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) adults, teens, tweens, and everyone in between (including you infants!),

Did you ever want to be a hero? You know don the famous Superman cape (minus the tights)  and save the world or fly around in the Batmobile saving Gotham City from the evil Joker or be a high-flying panda capable of epic kung-fu moves (here’s looking at you Po)? The reality is we all have the opportunity to be a superhero every single day. There are moments when someone needs your help – be it a neighbor, a family member, or a stranger halfway across the globe. By taking a minute to make ourselves more aware about the plight and suffering of others, we can have the chance to be the superhero that carves out a solution to resolve an individual’s or community’s big problem. Saturday afternoon, we began our youth activity be explaining the Muslim Heroes service project our young men will in shaa Allah (God-willing) be working on over the next six weeks. They will have the opportunity to find a problem in their own local community or a national/international problem where people need our help. After identifying a problem, our youth will prepare a case to present to their fellow IYG buddies. The case(s) that receive the strongest support will continue on as our service project(s) for the Halalapalooza 2013 program.

After our superhero discussion, it was time for our young men to get their game face on. Why? Every four years the world plays a pretty important futbol tournament you may have heard of before called the World Cup. A little birdie told our IYG mentors the World Cup is supposed to be in Brazil in 2014 (but don’t tell anyone else, okay?). So our mentors thought, why not stage our own FIFA soccer tournament in 2013? Today marked the start of the “group stage” of the tournament. Next Friday will serve as the “knockout stage” leading ultimately to the team that will be crowned as the FIFA 2013 champion! Check out our young men in action below with extreme CAUTION…you might get motivated to exercise after checking out these photos:

And sttttrreeetttccchhh. Feel the burn! Murtaza thinks he's funny. While everyone moves to their right, he goes left...our mentors are not amused.

"The Smotherer." This dude could seriously be an amazing hockey goalie. Nobody could score against him today. Can I get a M-V-G chant?!? He was after all the Most Valuable Goalie!
