Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) dear parents and youth,

Finally, ALHAMDULILLAH! After several rainy events, we were greeted with warm rays of spectacular sunshine this afternoon. Why was this so important? Well you can’t really enjoy the game of Ultimate Frisbee indoors…believe us, we’ve tried it before.

Today’s IYG event began with a race for water; yes you read that statement correctly. We began the event with a race for water. Each attendee was given a cherry red cup and asked one-by-one to go fill the cup with water from a water fountain near the ISGL entrance. As our timekeepers Mujtaba and Nurideen watched on, youth raced to earn the title of “Water Cup Filler to the Top Champ” (yes that is a mouthful,we know). Our fastest racer was able to complete the task in under 20 seconds. However there was one problem; he forgot to actually put water in the cup! On average, it took our youth about 30 seconds to walk to the water fountain, fill the cup halfway with water, and walk back to the timekeeper. Why was this exercise so important? Besides earning bragging points (and the cool official title of “Water Cup Filler to the Top Champ”), the activity was a practical example of how easy it is to earn a ton of reward. How? Well in a few days the month of Ramadan will begin in shaa Allah (God-willing). Ramadan is a sacred month in which Muslims (who are able to) give up food and drink (including water) during the daylight hours (from just before sunrise to sunset). It is an opportunity to develop a closer relationship with our Creator, Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, by increasing in our worship of Him and by serving others. A hidden gem within this month is that every single day you can earn a double reward for fasting. Say what? It’s the truth! You see when you fast, naturally there is a reward you get from Allah for fasting. However we can double the reward if we help to feed another person who is fasting too! Don’t believe us? Check out this cool authentic narration from the Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam:

“Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person, without any deduction coming from the fasting person’s reward.” (Recorded by At-Tirmidhi)

Thus by giving a friend, family member, or fellow IYG member a cup of water when the time comes for breaking the fast in Ramadan, we can earn double the reward (one reward for our own fasting and one additional reward for feeding another person who was fasting). Given that it took our youth only 30 seconds to fill a cup of water (whereas it would 16+ hours just to fast one entire day in Ramadan this year), that is a pretty amazing reward!

After our brief discussion, our youth broke up into teams in order to play 60 heart-pumping minutes of Ultimate Frisbee. Our youth competed hard as they ran up and down the field, catching, throwing, and defending. Once the game was over, our young men moved back into the cool confines of the ISGL to vote on their favorite finished art product from last Friday’s IYG Pottery Fest. Though words could paint a pretty picture, we’ll let the pictures tell the whole story of Friday’s festivities:
