Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) fellow readers,

A few weeks back our young men prepared a family-style meal for residents of the Salvation Army Family Emergency Shelter in Lafayette. End of Semester Group Picture

The Spring 2011 Program for the ISGL Youth Group is now officially over. Alhamdulillah the youth and volunteers enjoyed many great moments over the past semester. As they say, all good things must eventually end; and so too must our Spring 2011 program. We wish all of our youth and their families a safe, enjoyable remainder of the school year as well as an awesome summer.

In shaa Allah our next youth activity will be Camp Tecumseh on June 4-5. The camp, jointly organized by the Big Sister/Little Sister and ISGL Youth Groups, will in shaa Allah be an amazing two-day experience full of fun activities, educational workshops, and opportunities to strengthen the bonds of friendship which our youth have slowly built during the ISGL Youth Group activities.

The ISGL Youth Group will also be conducting its second annual July (or Halalapalooza) Program this summer in shaa Allah. Last summer’s trial run proved to be an amazing experience. Hopefully this year’s July program will top last year’s program. While Salah and Haroon would love to share a few juicy tidbits from what this year’s July program will contain, we want to have the anticipation of the program build before releasing any details!

Once again, Salah and Haroon would like to thank all of the parents, community members, and members of the ISGL EC Board for their continued support of all youth activities!

Pizza Party Re-cap

Assalamu-alaikum parents and youth,

Friday night served as the conclusion to the ISGL Youth Group Spring 2011 Program. Over the past semester, the youth had an amazing time with a variety of activities including swimming, bowling, capture the flag, dodgeball, making homemade pizza, and an ice cream social. We were able to enjoy and benefit from the knowledge of Imam Muhammad Ndiaye and Shaykh Gyasi Mckinzie through their wonderful talks to the community. Alhamdulillah, the youth also benefited from  short talks on family relations in Islam, dealing with anger, the topic of mercy and compassion, and a discussion of what each youth did over Spring Break.

Salah was able to capture pictures from the pizza party on Friday night which can be found below. The evening started out with a group discussion where each member of the youth group talked about their favorite activities this semester, least favorite activity this semester, and how they want to see the youth group improve for the future. After the discussion, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner of pizza.

Yacoub entertains the crowd with a scary story

After a nice quantity of pizza was consumed, the youth were surprised to learn there would be dessert as well. Friday night’s dessert choice…ICE CREAM!

One can't fully enjoy pizza without a great dessert...umm, ice cream

Explaining the rules of the sock game

After dessert, Tassawar and Yacoub taught the youth how to play, wait for it…the sock game. That is right, the object of the game is to capture other player’s socks while safeguarding your own socks from being ripped off by someone else. The game is actually quite fun to play (if you can get by the odd smells which certain socks give off over others) as is captured below. The sock game served as a fun ending to a great semester alhamdulillah!

Assalamu-alaikum parents and youth,

Friday night marks the end of our Spring 2011 ISGL Youth Group program. This semester has seen the number of participants steadily increase each week. We appreciate the support and trust the youth and their families have shown in the youth group. In shaa Allah the youth group will continue to grow and improve on the quality of activities we are able to provide.

Alright, enough about the sad stuff. This week’s activity features the return of many of our youth’s favorite food dish: PIZZA! On Friday night, the youth will have the opportunity to joyfully devour slices of warm, tasty pizza. During the party, Salah and Haroon will talk to the youth in small groups (based on age). We’ll review the activities conducted over the past semester and discuss what direction the youth want to see the youth group take for the future (in terms of activities and short discussions).

If your son(s) will be joining us on Friday for the party, please email Haroon by Wednesday evening. Details of the party are below:
