Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you),

Last night our younger youth had the opportunity to enjoy an IYG End-of-Semester party. Today was our older youth’s turn to enjoy their final event for the semester. We headed out on a short road trip down I-65 to X Site for a couple hours of intense laser tag. How intense you ask? Well a goose wanted to join us but we had to politely tell him he couldn’t join us. Don’t believe us? The pictures below prove we speaketh the truth:

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) youth, parents, and readers around the world,

Sadly tonight marked the end of our Spring 2014 Program for our younger youth. Alhamdulillah this past semester, we’ve learned about gems found in the Qur’an in the surahs we recite daily, good qualities to look for in friends (thanks to How to Train Your Dragon!), dealing with our feelings of anger in a healthy manner, the power of forgiveness (shout out to Br. Majid Mahmoud), and thanking our parents for all that they do for us. Tonight was a final way for our IYGers to celebrate all that they had learned and accomplished this past semester. What better way to celebrate than to go to the one place where EVERYONE can be a kid (again)…CHUCK-E-CHEESE!!!

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) fellow readers,

Alhamdulillah the weather outside today was beautiful, warm, and perfect for an outdoor activity. After being cooped up indoors for much of the past three months waiting for the snow to melt, our youth had a LOT of excess energy to put to good use. Our mentors walked our youth through a light stretching session before walking to the intramural fields for a fun game of Capture the Flag! The game went back-and-forth over the course of 60 minutes as our youth gleefully raced up and down the field chasing the flag (and one another). With 5 minutes left in the game, the score was 6-5. 5 minutes later, the game concluded in a 6-6 tie! Enjoy the pictures below from the awesome game:

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) fellow readers,

Throughout the Qur’an and Sunnah, examples can be found where both Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, and Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam, stress the importance of showing mercy and compassion to our parents. In many periods of our life, especially when we are really, really young (think baby young, terrible twos, toddling threes, exploratory fours, and sweet sixteens that may not be so sweet!), we often don’t full appreciate all that our parents did to nurture and care for us. When they would tell us no (for our own good), we may have not realized the wisdom behind their decision (and instead proceed to throw a bizarre tantrum or hissy fit to voice our displeasure). One blog post would not be sufficient to properly thank our parents or acknowledge them for all that they have done and continue to do for us. So as a small way of saying “thank you” our youth embarked on a thoughtful gift-making venture Friday night to show appreciate to their parents. What did our youth end up making? Well see for yourself:

Our youth attack the kitchen. Murtaza and Mustafa gaze lovingly at the bottle of cooking oil on the counter. Wait...they can't be baking something delicious, can they?

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) fellow readers,

Friday night…warm weather mixed with a breezy wind…feels like a perfect day for a friendly game of bowling! Our elder IYGers decided to challenge one another to a friendly competition of Angry Birds…eh…we meant bowling; so we hopped into our super-vehicle and drove over to the PMU Rack and Roll bowling alley to settle this competition once and for all. As you’ll see below, the competition was quite fierce but thoroughly entertaining:

Indoor Soccer & Guest Talk by Br. Majed Mahmoud – Friday, March 28, 2014

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) youth, parents, and readers everywhere,

Tonight was supposed to be our semester youth community service project…however the West Lafayette community was fortunate to enjoy a visit from guest speaker, Br. Majed Mahmoud. As Br. Majed was scheduled to deliver a talk about repentance Friday evening (around the same time as our youth group event), the IYG mentors decided to tweak the original plan. As our youth gathered at the ISGL, they were surprised with the good news that they would instead be playing 50 minutes of non-stop indoor soccer. Afterward, our young men walked to Stewart Center on Purdue University’s campus to listen to a valuables lesson delivered by Br. Majed. Below are a few pictures capturing the fun soccer match which took place before Br. Majed’s talk:

Deep Dish Pizza Night – Friday, March 14, 2014

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) readers everywhere,

Tonight marked the start of Spring Break vacation for our IYG mentors (so they thought until they realized graduate students do not really get a vacation :(). What better way to kick-off the mini-break than providing an important culinary lesson for our older youth? As 3 billion pizzas are sold every year to Americans (and the average person consumes 46 slices of pizza each year, goodness gracious!) and youth tend to be the biggest pizza lovers, our mentors thought it a valuable teaching opportunity to have our youth learn the task of making their very own pizza, from scratch! We’re not talking about your average, run-of-the-mill pizza either; we’re talking about DEEP DISH PIZZA!!! In addition to being able to make pizza at home for their families, tonight’s cooking lesson provided our older youth with an important life skill they could put to good use once they have to start preparing home-cooked meals for themselves (away from the friendly confines of their parents’ kitchen).

After head chef (Br. Ihsan) mixed flour, water, and yeast together to prepare our pizza dough, our young men took over the kitchen to prepare their very own unique pizza concoctions. What ensued was a mesh of culinary madness and genius as you’ll see below:

Our young men are primed and ready for action...well everyone except for Omar who is apparently attempting to sleep in a vertical direction!

Vinegar Volcanoes – Friday, March 7, 2014

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) readers, writers, and arithmetic geniuses (yes we’re talking about you!),

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to witness the eruption of a volcano? On Friday evening our youth had a chance to witness such an event…albeit on a very safe, small (homemade) scale. Yes you are correct! IYG Crazy Science Experiments returned Friday evening as our mentors provided a cool science demonstration about how to make a homemade chemical volcano. With a few simple supplies (construction paper, water bottle, and tape) and tools (scissors primarily), you too can build your very own cool (or hot) erupting volcano. Working in teams of four, our young men helped their teammates construct neat designs for their volcanoes (there was even one that looked like a space shuttle!). Afterward, our mentors assisted each team with testing if their volcano could withstand the “lava” produced from a simple chemical reaction involving vinegar, water, baking soda, and dishwasher detergent (mix water, baking soda, and detergent together in a bottle -> add the vinegar -> watch the “lava” show which unfolds!).

As our IYGers worked on their mini-volcanoes, our mentors took a moment to discuss how to deal with feelings of anger. As our youth pointed out, people become angry for different reasons – they earn a bad grade at school, get into an argument with a family member, can’t figure out how to solve a homework problem, or get into a spirited verbal exchange during a sports activity. Anger is a normal human emotion…however dealing with anger in a positive and productive manner can ensure a tense situation doesn’t get worse. Taking a chapter from the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam, (peace and blessings be upon him), our mentors mentioned tips our youth could use to deal with feelings of anger to make sure these feelings don’t lead to a volcanic eruption at home/school. Among the tips presented included:

  • Sitting down when one starts to feel angry
  • Lying down on one’s side if the feeling of anger doesn’t go away after sitting down (trick your body to think it is sleeping so your heart rate slows down!)
  • Perform wudu or wash one’s face with cold water (cool down your body temperature!)
  • Seek help from Allah by saying “auoodi billahi mina shaytan nir rajeem” (I seek refuge/help with Allah from the accursed shaytan/satan) because we forget that shaytan often tries to sow seeds of dislike between people

After our mini-discussion, our youth were off to the races to build and test their mini-volcanoes as you can see from the pictures below:

Muhammad and Abdullah look very angry...Nurideen and Mohamed try to cheer up their friends with gigantic smiles!

Ben’s Soft Pretzel Night – Saturday, March 1, 2014

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) parents, youth, and readers worldwide,

When one thinks of Spring-time in the U.S. one most likely thinks of warm weather, green grass, barbeques, and the return of outdoor sports (especially baseball!). What is a great snack often sold by vendors at these outdoor sporting events? PRETZELS!!! But have you ever tried making your very own pretzel (microwaving one from a box found in the local grocery store doesn’t count)? Most of our youth had not experienced the joy experienced by making a homemade pretzel. Thanks to help from the crew at Ben’s Soft Pretzels in West Lafayette, our youth had the opportunity to finally enjoy the experience of making their very own handmade, home-cooked (or masjid-cooked in our case) pretzels. Using dough, soda water, and a heated oven (plus some very strong muscles), our youth put their energy to good use this afternoon in the kitchen as they prepared delicious homemade pretzels (in various shapes, designs, and sizes as you’ll see in the pictures below):

After dividing our youth into teams, the elder lads patiently awaited their turn in the kitchen by conversing about the beauty of the red tablecloth before them...

IYG Cinema Night Presents “How to Train Your Dragon” – Friday, February 21, 2014

Assalamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) readers, writers, and authors of all ages,

What is the true value of a good friend? What qualities are important to look for in a good friend – humor, honesty, piety, good character, compassionate, sweet & sour (wait that is a type of sauce, correct?)? Our youth had a chance to contemplate over these important questions on Friday evening as they watched the critically-acclaimed (at least to our mentor movie critics) movie “How to Train Your Dragon.” While none of our youth actually were given the opportunity to train a real dragon, the movie provided valuable lessons about friendship (be it with a friendly dragon or a human) and important qualities to look for in a good friend. Next week, as we bake delicious soft pretzels, in shaa Allah (God-willing), we’ll get the chance to reflect upon the qualities of good friends our youth discovered from the movie and then share them with all of you via this blog. Until then, enjoy a few snapshots from tonight’s event:

Danyal thought we were watching a scary movie so he tried to set the tone with this frightening image...can someone take the camera away from Danyal please???
